Gastric Bypass Surgery for Diabetes Patients May Reduce or Treat Symptoms
A Cleveland Clinic study indicates that gastric bypass surgery may work better than medicine in some cases for treating diabetes. This form of weight loss surgery involves reducing the size of the stomach and then bypassing the upper part of the intestine. Then the lower part of the intestine is connected to the newly formed and smaller stomach. Physicians believe that bariatric surgery may lead to a favorable change in certain types of so-called “gut hormones.” These hormones can help the pancreas secrete more insulin to help treat diabetes. One study in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows gastric bypass surgery in severely obese people may reduce or even treat all symptoms of diabetes without the help of medicine. Learn more about how weight loss surgery has helped some Cleveland Clinic patients improve their blood sugar level and reduce their amount of diabetes medication.
