Visualizing Your Food Consumption Can Cause Obesity

Posted on December 5th, 2010 by Christine Smith in weight loss surgery | No Comments »

We may think that eating a sensible salad at dinner followed by a fudge brownie will balance each other out calorie-wise, the fact of the matter is that people who balance their calories this way are actually more likely to be consuming more calories than they need. The result of this can be seen in America’s ongoing struggle with obesity.

Results from a recent survey on obesity and eating habits showed that out of the 934 participants, few were able to accurately estimate the number of calories they had consumed in 4 separate meals. Some 50% of those questioned were asked to calculate the calories in high-fat, high-carbohydrate meals, such as cheeseburgers or cheesesteaks made with pepperoni or meatballs. The other 50 percent had to come up with a calorie count for these same foods, along with healthy side dishes such as apples, celery or a small salad.

The study revealed that the participants’ idea of how many calories were in the various items were based on which they saw first – the high-fat item or the healthy side dish. Those who were shown a cheeseburger first estimated an average calorie count of about 699. And the participants who first viewed a salad and then the cheeseburger said the meal had only 656 calories on average.

Clearly, our eyes can play tricks on us when it comes to counting calories. People think if they combine a healthy dish with something more fattening, they will really be eating fewer calories by balancing it out. This tendency to see more food as less can lead people to consume more than their body needs – a fact that becomes disturbing in light of the current obesity epidemic in the United States.

An interesting result gleaned from the survey dealt with the perceptions of caloric intake that were given by people who were dieting. In general, the dieters were more likely to underestimate the number of calories in various meals. And when the findings from this group were compared to the statistics from people who didn’t care what they weighed, the dieters underestimated their calorie consumption by twice as much as the non-dieters.

Protein – The Denominator Customary to All Diets

Posted on November 29th, 2010 by Jim Duffy in weight loss surgery | No Comments »

The Human Body is in constant flux with the environment. Matter and molecules circulate in and out, casting themselves into its complexities. Although the body provides the framework, it’s really what you put in it – your food plan – which in the end determines your overall fitness. By controlling what composes your food regimen you’re virtually choosing what stays inside your body. Making firm decisions concerning your diet reveals your keen knowledge of metabolism and the nutrients which will alter it. There are countless diets which declare to be very efficient for certain activities or illnesses. But the one macronutrient that is required by all of the diets in various amounts regardless of the physiological state is protein.

Proteins hold this particular place in each eating regimen for a variety of reasons. They link the DNA to the rest of the cell and regulate all cellular capabilities and reactions. They are the scaffolds of the human body that struts a billion cells. Proteins additionally act as tireless workers that scuttle across the entire body to relay messages, perform repairs and assist in digestion. Oxygen from the lungs and many nutrients from the intestine are protein packed and delivered to their destination. Protein creates the motors in our muscle groups and the antibodies in our immune system. If genes characterize life in a DNA helix, then proteins are life’s representation in its fundamental, decoded form. Their pervasiveness makes them indispensable and, protein synthesis a priority in metabolism.

Add to this myriad of functions the astronomical turnover rate of proteins, and steady protein synthesis becomes vital. Proteins have a brief life span and are instantly converted by the body into their corresponding amino acids. New proteins are required to take their place. The skin itself is renewed each seven days. Then there are proteins that get used up, damaged or excreted, and must be produced again. Protein synthesis goes on at a frantic pace even in normal people. Then there are durations of rapid progress, like athletes in training, teenagers, convalescent patients, infants, pregnant, or lactating mothers, where protein synthesis reaches an all time high. Proteins are broken down for different causes as well. During times of stress, illness, or hunger, the body is unable to find ample energy sources. In such circumstances, proteins are taken apart into their constituent amino acids and are used as fuel. Therefore, cells are always busy at work to be able to produce new proteins, across all physiological states.

To keep this compulsory and intense rate of protein synthesis, the body needs a dedicated supply of amino acids. Unfortunately, the body is not designed to store additional amino acids however, not like in the case of carbohydrates and fat which can stockpile as much as they please. The relentless need for proteins and amino acids however needs to be satisfied each day from three potential sources: from the diet, from cellular production. Of these, cellular production would be most convenient. If only our physique cells can create all of the required amino acids on their very own, then there would be no have to look for them in our diet. However, there are amino acids that simply can’t be produced in the body. Hence, these ‘essential amino acids’ should be sourced from our diet.

The best various then would be to supply proteins from our weight loss plan or through supplements. In this way, the provision of all amino acids is assured and in their proper amounts. Cellular metabolism is relieved of the duty to provide amino acids apart from making minor adjustment in the supply chain. Protein synthesis can go on uninterrupted. Unless the food regimen meets the perpetual demand for amino acids, different, relatively expendable, body proteins are broken down to meet the requirement. In effect, a dietary deficiency of proteins forces the physique to feed on itself.

It is simple that proteins are wanted in every diet. The average American food regimen offers 1.2 g/kg of protein against the recommended daily allowance of 0.eight g/kg. The query, then, is whether or not to add protein supplements to an present food regimen? While proteins from meals could seem satisfactory, there is no telling whether or not all essential amino acids are supplied, and there may be little method of realizing how easily these proteins are digested and assimilated into the body. A rigorously researched protein complement like Profect, when taken regularly, would take away such uncertainties.

Aside from providing amino acids for protein synthesis, a protein-rich weight loss program anchored on Profect has other advantages as well. Studies on high-protein diets have demonstrated their ability to induce weight loss. A protein-rich weight loss program enables you to feel full earlier and reduces the entire energy intake. In impact, protein synthesis (which is an vitality-consuming process) is promoted. The energy to assimilate such a weight-reduction plan, calculated as the “Thermogenic impact of feeding”, is high. The physique weight drops down and the lean physique mass improves as extra calories are burned, and extra proteins are synthesized. Flab is changed with brawn.

Proteins from Profect kind bioactive peptides in the intestine that may enhance gut defenses. The regular flora is permitted to inhabit the intestinal lining whereas the damaging intestine micro organism are annihilated. Profect also protects the system from free radicals, free electron molecules produced throughout intense exercise and stress. Free radicals are identified to break cell membranes. It can also be investigated for its part in such phenomenon as getting old, cancer, and blood clotting. Profect increases the levels of Glutathione, a free radical scavenger that mops up free radicals shielding the cell from their effects. Furthermore, the extra water-soluble vitamins and minerals in Profect inhibit calcium loss as well as different micronutrients commonly seen in different excessive-protein diets.
