gastric bypass post op diet?? protien supplement?

Posted on August 29th, 2010 by admin in gastric bypass surgery diet | 1 Comment »

I’m having gastric bypass surgery in a few weeks, I’m attending a 4 hour pre op class next week which is probably going to have all my answers but I want to hear from people who r going through this. I know that after surgery I’m on the liquid diet for a week then the other stages but what did u eat exactly and how did u eat it and what were u feeling and most important what kind of protien supplement did u use, how did u use it, when did u use it, how much n bla bla…and what kind. I do not kno what kind or form of protien supplement I should look at. Tell me what u did. Only people who have had the surgery please. Thank u.

Different surgeons like different programs after surgery. In my case, I was on pureed foods for four weeks after surgery. I cooked things like turkey breast and roast beef and pureed it with the gravy and that was my protein source. I also had oatmeal, yogurt and pureed fruits. I pureed carrots and green beans which were not all that great but passable. I drank V-8 juice, too. My surgeon wants people on a varied, balanced, diet after surgery so protein supplements weren’t an option. I literally sat down each evening and planned out what I was going to eat and when, for the next day. However, since I started doing cardio and weight training after surgery, I eventually added a whey protein shake or two into my diet each day. You can’t absorb more than about 30 grams of protein at a sitting so look for a protein supplement that will give you that per serving. I usually stick with something vanilla flavored, as that lends itself to adding things like fruit or flavorings to make it more palatable. You might look for one of those little battery powered mixers, too. We usually had 2 or 3 of those around and they were a lot easier than getting out the blender. A shaker works, too. But, you are right – your questions will be answered in your class.

What are the risks for surgery outcome for a liquid diet of 3days vs. 2weeks. gastric bypass?

Posted on August 22nd, 2010 by admin in gastric bypass surgery diet | 1 Comment »

The doctor recommends 2weeks and I have only completed 3 days as of the eve of the surgery.

Probably the reason for being on liquids for two weeks is to help get rid of some of the fat in your liver. When they do the surgery, they have to retract ("move out of the way") the liver. The bigger and fattier your liver is, the more retraction they need to do. Makes the job a bit more difficult for the surgeon but nothing they can’t work around. But, if they have to move things around more, you might have more discomfort after surgery. It’s not that your gut needs to be cleaned out or anything like that, since they are only working on the upper part of your gastrointestinal system.
