LAP-BAND surgery has advantages over the Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG). Adjustable lap bands require no cutting or stapling of the stomach. The outlet size of the band can be adjusted by injection saline into the band to loosen or tighten the band. In addition, the band is more easily reversible with restoration of normal stomach anatomy after band removal. There are some disadvantages of the LAP-BAND including: Risk of band slippage around the stomach to an abnormal position, the risk of the band eroding into the stomach, port or tubing problems, mechanical malfunction of the band, and it does not limit intake of high calorie liquids or sweets. All of the disadvantages are known to occur in 10-22% of patients, and many require another operation to correct the condition. The LAP-BAND is not a permanent device and will require replacement or removal at some point in the future.
