I want legitimate opinions from people who have done one or the other or know enough to provide helpful counsel. Ok. I am grossly overweight, obviously, I am 5′6" and I am almost 400 lbs. I need something fairly drastic and harder to cheat but I am also only 19 years old and do not want to deal with gastrointestinal issues the rest of my life. I am between getting the LAP band (stomach banding) and the Gastric bypass (stomach removal). They both have pros and cons. The pros and cons of the banding one is that it is easily adjustable or reversible but also from what I heard, it has a much lower success rate with people actually losing weight. That one is easier to cheat. The other one has what I consider to be more intense consequences both positive and negative. This one is a one time deal. Once it is done, there is no going back and my girlfriend has a boss at her job that did that one like a year ago and he is still having bowel issues. I do not mind taking supplements my whole life but I do not want to be having bathroom issues my whole life. However, it is much more drastic. Weight drops off faster and it is almost impossible to cheat because you will sorely regret eating anything that is not exactly what you are supposed to eat. Another extenuating circumstance is that the last time I checked, I was borderline diabetic. My dad desperately wants me to lose the weight quickly so I do not slip into diabetes. He thinks if I go with the removal surgery, I will stand a better chance of nipping this thing in the bud.
I have the lap band, and I think you should have gastric bypass. At your weight, the lap band will likely not be very effective. People with the lap band typically lose a lot less weight than with gastric bypass. Would you be happy if you ended up weighing 300 pounds? It’s also easy to cheat, and many people have no effect at all, especially if they’re really heavy, like you.
However, you’re right that gastric bypass has more complications, potentially, and is a more drastic surgery. But drastic times call for drastic measures. 400 pounds at age 19 is just really extreme! Without bypass, what’s going to happen? Are you going to be 600 pounds by age 30? Trust me, you’ll be in the hospital a lot more by not having gastric bypass, than by having gastric bypass. And you need the surgery now, because any fatter and the risks go way up. There are a lot of support groups you can join.
Good luck!
